Product settings: discounts and commissions

Before you start, open this page: Sales / Product settings.

Can’t find one? It may be turned off for your business, or your account may not be allowed to open it. Ask the person who set up your FeePrime. They can fix both.

Product settings decide two things for a whole slice of your products. Can they be discounted? And do they earn commission?

It is a small page that stops a large and expensive kind of mistake.

Rules go on groups, not on products

A product setting attaches to one of your product groups. A parent category, a category, or a subcategory. It holds three rules.

  • Discount eligible. Can anything in here be discounted at all?
  • Max discount percent. If it can, how far is anyone allowed to go?
  • Commission eligible. Do sales in here earn commission?

Because you set it on a group, one record covers everything inside that group.

So you describe your policy once. You do not tick a box on nine hundred products and miss forty of them.

The limit matters more than the switch

Whether something can be discounted is the obvious setting. The maximum is the one that saves you money.

Some of what you sell makes enough profit to survive a generous discount. Some of it does not.

And the person giving the discount is usually not the person who knows which is which. They are standing with a customer, under pressure, wanting to close the sale.

Accessories can be discounted, up to 25%
Phones can be discounted, up to 5%
   Prepaid airtime cannot be discounted

Set that once and it holds, whoever is serving, on whatever day, without anyone having to remember the profit on each line.

Commission

Commission eligible marks part of your range as earning commission when it sells.

It works together with the commission rules in the offers lesson, where an offer group can say who earns and how much.

Hold on to this difference. Product settings say what is allowed to earn commission. The offer says who earns on this particular deal.

Do this early

Like taxes and currencies, this is cheap now and expensive later.

Adding a discount policy to a range that is already big means going back through what has already been sold, and at what discount. That is a much worse afternoon than deciding the policy today.

Try it

On staging.feeprime.com, create a product setting for one group with a low maximum discount. Then try to go past it. Feeling the rule stop you teaches it better than reading about it.
